Using props during a boudoir session is one of my favorite ways to give you something to do with your hands. I can give you all the posing instructions in my mental boudoir toolkit. However, you’ll probably be more comfortable if your hands have a job to do. This doesn’t mean you are free to clumsily grasp a rose stem with a closed fist like a toddler with a lollipop. Instead, a gentle touch of a petal or clutch of a blanket can tell a story. A boudoir photography prop can enhance the effect of the overall photo while also making you feel more comfortable, when you may feel out of place on the boudoir set.
Sheets and blankets are classic boudoir photography props because they can be wrapped delicately or grabbed ferociously to change the tone of the photo. They’re also a great tool for strategically showing some skin without revealing full nudity. If it is made of fur, the blanket prop is elevated in comfort and significance.
A long string of pearls or beads is an enticing play toy in boudoir. Imagine draping the necklace over your chest or running the beads on your lips to turn up the heat by about one thousand degrees!
A good book is romantic both in its relationship with the reader and also the romance within its pages. Whether you’re deeply involved in a book or daydreaming with the book resting on your body it tells a story of fantasy. It also gives you something to play with while posing for perfect shots.
You may think of a chair as a fixture rather than a prop. In boudoir, it is very much a prop. An antique chaise creates a sensual masterpiece. Straddling a wooden bar chair paints a picture of naughtiness.
For those of you who play instruments you know the passion that is involved in learning to play. You have to want to play. It is necessary to almost have to have lust for your instrument. You can easily display this through boudoir photography as your fingers and lips play music.
A silhouetted woman with fingers gracefully holding a pair of strappy heels wearing nothing but lingerie or a satin slip is top-tier sexy. It also makes it easy to keep the hands loose and elegant.
A wine glass might seem like an obvious choice for a boudoir prop. It isn’t just because the drink is often paired with dinner dates and close encounters on the couch. Wine glasses are also something that can stimulate movement. You can almost dance with the glass to get authentic and natural poses.
A wildflower bouquet may tell a story of picking flowers in beautiful fields. A dozen red roses tell a vastly different story of loving gestures. Not only does a bouquet of flowers tell a story, but it can add a coordinated pop of color to your boudoir photography shoot.
A mirror is a great prop choice. You can use any size of mirror in a boudoir shoot because you can lean against it or hold it up. It can keep the hands busy, and it gives alternate angles and views that aren’t achievable without the power of reflection.
Some props are more fun to use than others. One that is particularly fun is an antique telephone. Whether it is a vintage rotary or an old crank phone, these props give you an element of fantasy that reminds you of the days of Marilyn Monroe and other glamorous pinups.
You literally don’t need anything but your body to have a boudoir session. However, the experience may be more complete or more comfortable with a little help from some props. You can turn just about anything into a tantalizing boudoir prop. If you need suggestions, I am ready with many more options and open-minded to new ideas.
