As I rushed my kids out the door this morning, I saw my 18-year-old pause at the mirror. Normally I’d have admonished her and rallied her to hurry so she would not be late. But there was something in her eye. A glint, a laugh, a confident thought. You see, even as she donned her mask — as per the pandemic, she still had that confidence in her spirit.
She posed a little to adjust her outfit, fixed her hair, and pecked my cheek as she ran out the door. I turned to look at myself in that very same mirror and remembered the days I felt like that, charging off to greet the world. Did I look like that this morning? No. Do I often avoid the mirror so as not to have to fix my hair again? Yes. Today there was something I saw in her confidence that reminded me that I gave it to her! That was me once. I was that confident young lady living life and loving myself and I managed to teach her to feel the same.
Now during these long days of winter and a worldwide pandemic, it is hard to focus enough to reflect on ones’ self. I feel lucky my glimpse of that glowing young lady reminded me of me. I am fabulous and fearless when I need to be! Maybe not as much lately as I work from home and often choose yoga pants instead of an actual outfit. Which led me to my next thought… I have to reconnect with that old me. The one who winks at herself in the mirror before heading out on a date with my husband. The one who can walk into a room and own it. And the one who can do anything my mind imagines.
So now, here I am, dreaming of booking a boudoir photography session. I can’t wait to see myself with my makeup and hair perfectly styled. Loving myself and my body in a beautiful life-affirming way. My sweet husband has always been right by my side lifting me up and loving me no matter what kind of day we are having. I can’t wait to share my photoshoot with him. He will be so surprised, but not amazed. He knows my inner warrior and the minx that supports her. I can glow in my own right as a woman who is confident and strong. A woman who has found her confidence again.
