Ladies, I’m gonna say something a little controversial…
Boudoir isn’t for everyone. Yes, you read that right. Let me explain.
You should NOT book a boudoir shoot if you can’t name even one thing that you LOVE about your body.
We send out a client questionnaire prior to our sessions asking clients what they LOVE about their bodies so that I can be sure to highlight it in their photographs…we ask, do you love your boobs OR your butt? 99.9% of our clients can answer one or the other.
This year though, 0.01% answered by filling the box with a list of what they hated about themselves. One hated her hair, nose, teeth, elbows, arms, legs, knees, shins, hands, feet, face, boobs, & butt, on & on the list went and yes she actually listed out each body part individually like that. I’m still super puzzled as to what exactly she expected me to photograph. Another said she only liked her face.
Ladies, I can’t create an entire album full of photos of only your face + whatever other tiny parts of your body you haven’t put on the hate list. I mean, I guess I could, but then I’d be a parts photographer, not a boudoir photographer. Boudoir photography contains mostly photos of boobs & butts from a wide variety of angles: Sitting, standing, kneeling, & laying from either a zoomed out or zoomed in perspective. There are literally no other photos I can take besides these.
If you hate everything about your body, then I strongly recommend you see a therapist rather than book me as there’s a high possibility you have body dysmorphia. Spend some time unpacking where all this self-hatred came from and only come to me when you can say you love your boobs OR your butt, even if you hate the in-between.
I’m not a fan of my back rolls, the cellulite on my hips, or my untoned abs & thighs (which is why I’ve started working out & eating better – these photos are Photoshopped incase you’re wondering), but I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVVVVVEEE my face, hair, boobs, butt, feet, hands, legs, & arms. That is why even when I’m not loving the things that are less than perfect, I can look at photos of myself and absolutely love them. I do my best to focus on the things I love about my body rather than the things I dislike.
If you only like your face & neither your boobs nor butt, please don’t book a boudoir session. I’m not a magician who can take the self-hatred you feel for your entire body and heal it through photography. Instead, book a headshot photographer, then seek therapy because you’re worthy of loving most of your body vs. nothing at all.
EDIT: I do want to make it clear that I’m not saying you have to love everything about yourself before a shoot because honestly, I’m not sure we ever get to that point. Every single one of my clients has struggled with insecurity in some form. My thinner clients tend to complain about their face or not having enough curves, my curvier clients tend to complain about rolls n’ things. I haven’t ever had a client who liked EVERYTHING about herself in 13 years. So long as you like enough that I have something to photograph vs. disliking your entire body, I can help you see the beauty that maybe it’s hard for you to see.
