When I think about the mistakes I’ve made or seen in boudoir photography, I don’t cringe. Instead, I’m thankful to be able to live and learn. Knowledge is power, and I like to share the knowledge I’ve gained through trial and error along with mistakes I’ve seen others make. Boudoir photography mistakes aren’t the end of the world, as most can be corrected during the photo session. My “Top 5 Boudoir Photography Mistakes” is a list of things to consider before your shoot, so you can avoid some tendencies and possibilities that can get in the way of a perfect boudoir photography session.
It might be taboo to say, but we all know sex is messy. Of course, you aren’t doing this at your photoshoot, but you are displaying sexiness, sexuality, and sexualization. See what I did there? All of those words include the word sex, which is why your boudoir photography session should include a little messiness. Messy sheets and messy hair are often-used forms of messiness that can heat up boudoir photographs. Sandy skin at the beach is another common messy photography element. Not all shots need messiness, but when you can use it, messiness sparks the imagination. It creates a realistic element that makes viewers feel like they’re in that intimate moment with you.
One thing I’ve learned after years of boudoir photography is to let it go, and sometimes this is hard. You have an idea for a perfect shot, and it just doesn’t come together. What you envision is not reality somehow, and that’s a difficult thought to digest. These days, I’ve become pretty good at shrugging off bad ideas and moving on. I recommend that my clients do the same. We will get the shot you desire, but it may be a little different than you predicted. Flexibility is very important for successful boudoir photography shoots.
I’m open to trying any props that my clients want to try, but sometimes they end up looking weird on-set. I’m not going to list any examples because they vary based on circumstance. What works for one person may not work for another. However, I have to be honest with my clients when the prop is detracting from their beauty or purpose. It’s okay to be wacky and funny with props, just be prepared for the results. Some of the “weirdest” props have made for great photos, so please don’t let this “mistake” limit you. But heed your photographer’s advice if they suggest removing it.
I love it when people who tend to be shy decide to have a boudoir photography session. It is liberating for most people but especially so for those who are accustomed to staying in the shadows. The challenge is maintaining an open line of communication. I want to hear what you are hoping to achieve in your shoot. It’s the only way I can ensure that my photography services provide you with the photos you want. We may only be together for a couple hours, but during that time, we have a relationship. Pretend I’m an old friend and let me know what you really want.
Lastly, lingerie options are a must for a successful photoshoot, especially if you are doing a big session. This is for multiple reasons. One piece of lingerie may not accentuate your best features as planned. It’s nice to have options that are more flattering. Secondly, most people want variety in their shoots. This means getting shots in different poses. Different colors or types of lingerie bring a good mix of color or varied skin coverages. You might choose one color scheme or one thematic type of lingerie, but most of the time, including variety is a good thing. Finally, sometimes there are lingerie mishaps. You don’t want a rip or broken strap to prevent your dream shoot. Having alternatives is like an insurance policy at your boudoir photography shoot.
Don’t focus too much time on avoiding boudoir photography mistakes. As I said before, most of them can be fixed on the set. More importantly, I’ve experienced many mistakes that turned out to be opportunities or happy accidents. The biggest thing to remember for a boudoir photography shoot is that you are a beautiful person inside and out, and you’re ready to flaunt it!
