The idea of boudoir photography is intimidating because it is intimate and private. Regardless of whether your photos are for personal use or public display, you are entrusting a photographer to capture the beauty of your human form without suffering any shame or embarrassment. Maybe you know your photographer, and it is easy to get cozy and comfortable. But more likely that your photographer is a stranger. A stranger who is going to capture your sexy, sultry side through casual conversation and advice. That doesn’t sound so bad, but a few boudoir jitters are understandable.
The reason you’ve chosen to do a boudoir shoot for the first time may be forgotten once you get there. Those boudoir jitters and doubt may cloud your reasons for wanting boudoir photos. So writing down your reasons for wanting it can help. The reasons should be specific and include what you want your photographer to know. Maybe the photos are a gift for a partner, and writing down the reasons for that gift can reaffirm the choice once entering a studio or photography setting.
Another thing to remember is that your photographer is there for you. So talk to her about any concerns or desires you have. For example, if there is a part of your body that you don’t want to highlight? Or things that you don’t want photographed? Communicate those things to your photographer. Even if you feel unsure that you want the photos afterward, a good boudoir photographer can remind you of the beauty and empowerment of the process.
Don’t be afraid to bug your photographer. She won’t mind! Questions and issues that may arise before the big day are normal. Getting them out prior to the shoot allows a person to process and acknowledge that they are in control of the shoot. The photographer’s goals are to portray you in the way you want to be portrayed, and they are skilled at photographing all body types in a way that is complimentary.
Let’s face it. We all want to look like we could be on the cover of a lingerie magazine, and boudoir photography can accomplish that. However, each person’s opinions and fears of boudoir photography can impact the enjoyment one experiences during the shoot. This totally negates the benefits of boudoir photography, which can empower women and reveal that every woman is beautiful. That is why it is important to prepare yourself for the amazingness of boudoir photography by writing down your goals, communicating with your photographer, and following up whenever more questions arise.
